Learn moreMetal or clear braces?
Metal braces are the workhorse of orthodontics, and for good reason. Small brackets and a guiding wire move the teeth into place, and they handle almost any case at any age, from simple crowding to a complicated bite. They are dependable, efficient and usually the most affordable way to straighten a smile.
Clear and ceramic braces work in exactly the same way, but the brackets are tooth-coloured or clear, so they blend against your teeth and stay far less noticeable. They are popular with teens and adults who want a lower-profile option, and the small ties that hold the wire are changed at every visit to keep them looking fresh.
Neither is better in the abstract: the right choice depends on your teeth, your goals and your budget, and Dr. Catherine McLeod will talk it through at your free consultation.
Braces designed for your teeth, not everyone else's
Most brackets are mass-produced and identical for every patient. LightForce is different. Each bracket is 3D-printed from a digital plan built around your own teeth, so it can be placed exactly where your treatment needs it, for well-controlled tooth movement.
Few practices in the region offer LightForce at all. If custom braces appeal to you, our LightForce page explains how the system works and who it suits.
A world without elastic ties
Self-ligating braces use a small built-in clip or slide to hold the archwire, instead of the elastic ties used on traditional braces. That means less friction on your teeth and, often, fewer and quicker adjustment visits. We offer Damon and Empower self-ligating systems.
It is never too late for braces
Orthodontic treatment is no longer just for teenagers. Today about one in five orthodontic patients is an adult, choosing treatment for a healthier mouth and a more confident smile. Clear and ceramic braces keep treatment discreet, and Dr. Catherine McLeod tailors the approach to your schedule and your goals.
How treatment works, from first visit to last
Braces treatment here follows a clear path. It begins with a free consultation at our Spring Garden Road practice, where Dr. Catherine McLeod examines your bite and takes a digital iTero scan, and you leave with a written plan and an exact quote. When you are ready, the braces go on in a single appointment, and after that you come in every six to ten weeks for a quick adjustment.
How long the whole thing takes depends on your bite. Most courses of braces run between eighteen and twenty-four months, though simpler cases finish sooner and more complex ones take longer. Every mouth is different, and Dr. Catherine McLeod gives you an honest estimate for yours rather than a number that just sounds good. When the braces come off, a retainer keeps your new smile in place.
Because she is a specialist orthodontist, not a general dentist, braces are what Dr. Catherine McLeod does every day. For the day-to-day, see our guide to life with braces; for how the cost works, our page on your investment.
